Harnessing Tourism for Ghana’s Economic Transformation.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park recorded the highest number of visits in 2024, with a total of 333,233, according to the latest report from Ghana’s tourism authorities.

The report highlights Ghana’s rich history and popular tourist destinations that continue to attract both domestic and international visitors.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a monument of historic significance dedicated to the memory of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Before the redevelopment, the park was attracting 98,000 tourists annually, a figure the Ghana tourism authority expects to increase through aggressive marketing.

Among the top attractions in the 2024 report was Kakum National Park, known for its iconic canopy walkway, which received 183,757 visits.

Bunso Arboretum and Kumasi Zoo also featured prominently, recording 155,149 and 133,954 visits, respectively.

But, it is also important to note that, the bad nature of roads linking some tourist sites in the country has come under the spotlight over the years. Some stakeholders have lamented that the situation poses a major setback towards promoting the sector.

As Ghana aims to position itself as the number one destination in Africa, there is a need to fix all roads linking to numerous tourist sites spread across the length and breadth of the country.

In 2024, the sector generated $4.8 billion, the highest in the country’s tourism history and welcomed 1.288 million international visitors, a 12 percent rise from 2023.

With these numbers skyrocketing, I am hopeful that the sector can become the number contributor to the contours GDP if proper measures and policies are placed.
