HOW ARE OFFSHORE RIGS ARE INSTALLED. by Isaac Agyei

Offshore rig or offshore oil platform is a big structure used to extract oil or gas in the rocks beneath the seabed. In deep water up to 1700ft (518m). The platform is held in place by large steel or concrete legs attached to the floor. From 1500ft -4900ft a taller fix platform is called a compliant tower will be used

rig

For deep water up to 12000ft (3658m) floating oil rigs will be used. There are several types of oil rigs platforms they use. I will like to highlight a type of floating oil rig called the semi submersible platform. This platform is supported on large pontoons . These pontoons provide buoyancy and allow the unit to float and by towed from location to location. Some offshore rigs are also equipped with propellers under the pontoons. Anchor will be used to secure the rigs at a designated point. Once on the location the pontoon structure is slowly flooded to keep them below the sea level . The work decks float on top of the water while the vast majority of them their mass is below the water surface. without the pontoon being submerged under the water the platform will be unstable when the sea is rough lets a look at what's on the oil rig, there is the hoisting system used to raise and lower the drill string , they are cranes used for transporting supplies between ship and the oil rig, living quarter this is where the crew members stay eat and sleep. helicopter pad ,crew members will be transported using helicopter emergency life boat an escape plan for crew members incase of any denture situations. a lot of liquid tanks that can be used to store water or fuel such as diesel. diesel used for power flare stack, they are often used for  burning off flammable gas . extracted oil might contain gas. this gas must be separated burned off to avoid  any possible explosion. the main purpose of an rig which is to drill and get oil out of the seabed. oil lies under so many layers of rock underneath the seabed .
